GUATEMALA: Nimaläj Kaqchikel Amaq’ School
Nimaläj Kaqchikel Amaq’ school was founded in 2003 in Chimaltenango Guatemala. Its objective is to give free quality education to underprivileged 4 to 18 years old children in our community. The idea is that through education, our students and their families will be able to come out of poverty and have a decent life.
Currently we have a total of 70 students. They are provided uniforms, school supplies, excellent education, tutoring, some medical help and a very happy environment. The government does not provide support as it only helps public schools.
Despite the lack of support, our students rank among the best in the country. In the standardized evaluations for 18 year olds, our students got 80% in reading comprehension and 90% in math compared to 30% and 10% respectively in the national average. Some of our graduates have gone on to become teachers, car mechanics, computer technicians, chefs, business owners. One of our graduates is now working in our school.
Our school is supported 100% from private donors including UNWG, to whom we are very grateful. We only have 70 students in the school because our budget only allows that many students. We can easily host 150 students if we have more funds.
The UNWG donations since 2017, are used to buy school supplies, construction materials to make a newclassroom, and books. All of these make a huge difference here in Guatemala.
We hope that in the future we will be able to continue to break the cycle of poverty through education. 24 August, 2024
